I would have liked less details of life before Lewis, less details about Joy’s poor marriage (which is a bit graphic and rather vulgar at times). She is the co-host and co-creator of the popular weekly online Friends and Fiction live web show and podcast.

The realness of the characters seeps through the pages and gives shape and voice to an author so many idolize. With flawless prose and engaging dialogue, the author weaves a beautiful love story of two literary minds. I liked what the author set out to do (as put forth in the author's note) but didn't feel like the text achieved that.It’s amazing to read stories which are linked with other famous authors and how their lives crossed, but also about belief/ religion and how this brought the two together. While it would be easy to judge Joy for some of her decisions regarding her first marriage, instead I am stirred by her fierce independence and willingness to risk it all for love.

It’s hard to decipher what happened and what is fabricated, but what a wonderful story in dedication to Joy it is. When Dunottar almost closed in 2014, Love Dunottar (a group of parents, alumni, staff and members of the community) asked teachers to open a Twitter account to support their campaign. Surely there must be something better out there to show what Lewis’ relationship with his wife was like, and gives glory to Christ for such a redemptive story rather than giving glory to Joy and Jack. But I loved her all the more for her faults and I loved Lewis himself all the more for the glimpses we get at his own weaknesses or uncertainty.

Although separated by an ocean, seventeen years difference in age, and individual traumas, love is powerful. My mistress; but at the same time all that any man friend (and I have good ones) has ever been to me. This is a great book for readers who love Lewis, who love love stories, who love history and who appreciate the ways literature and writing shape people and history. Filled with interesting tales of stories we’ve all grown up with, and romance lining every page, Becoming Mrs Lewis is a must read for any literary lover.

I know this is historical fiction—not necessarily fact—but it served to make real people even more real to me.
